Young women encounter challenges everyday. Girls today experience far more oppression than previous generations. The media-saturated culture they are coming of age in exposes them to immense pressures to be beautiful and sophisticated. As they navigate a more dangerous world, young women are less protected and can find themselves in situations they are not prepared to handle.
The Surf Institute is moving forward on its empowerment mission by developing a series of workshops geared specifically for the young female. Incorporating strategies produced by World YWCA and supported by the United Nations Population Fund, TSI founder, Carla Rowland has created a program that will put women in control of educating and empowering themselves to take action on key issues that affect their lives.
During each seminar, a portion of TSI’s Junior Wahine Empowerment Workshop will include hands-on activities and discussions led by fellow women who have earned success by carving their own path despite the challenges they’ve faced. Topics that will be addressed include:
- Self-esteem and body image
- Healthy eating
- Body awareness
- Strong leadership
- Conflict resolution
In addition to empowerment activities, the each seminar will include:
- Nature hike
- Kundalini yoga
- Healthy, organic lunch
- Ocean exploration
- Expert Guest Speaker
- Make-It-And-Take-It Activity
TSI’s Junior Wahine Empowerment Workshop is specifically tailored for girls ages 11-15. Every seminar will highlight a specific topic and will be held on Saturdays, from 8a – 4p, in the hills and on the beaches of Malibu.
